I love Sam Briggs and it was great to see her do the Open Workout. Especially this one that really requires a good engine to do well. For the record, I love and hate this workout. My goal for this year was to do at least one workout RX. And now it will happen because of this first workout.
The Announcement
Yes, I know it was confusing and we all miss Dave Castro. No, I don’t speak French and I didn’t watch that announcement, but I did watch the English one. Do I think it could have been done better? Yes. Am I upset with the announcement? NO. To be honest with all these changes happening at CrossFit and not a lot of public sharing I wasn’t surprised that the announcement wasn’t as good as last year.
Now, I do think that the Affiliates that did do the announcement that I watched did a good job given the situation. I also feel like each week it will get better as this is a learning curve. Just remember that it is your box and the people that you follow that matter.
Now let’s talk aboutthis workout.
Open Workout 19.1
15 Min AMRAP
- 19 Wallballs
- 19 Cal Row
My first thoughts on this workout is that I can RX this workout. And then my next thought is that I will run out of gas. The reason being, I am not very good at pacing myself. But that will be something I focus on when I do this workout.
I was originally shocked about how simple it was, but in all reality this is a great workout. It will almost be a guarantee that I will be rolling around on the ground after this workout completely spent. But don’t worry, I will share with you all the fun throughout this years Open.
How my Box does theOpen
First, I will say that I am extremely lucky to be apart of such an amazing box. Travis Mayer is the owner and he coaches class as well as train as an Elite Crossfit Athlete. We have an amazing coaching staff with all of our coaches and an amazing community.
While this is only my second year doing the Open here, theydo an inner Box challenge every year. Those of us who have signed up for theOpen get separated into teams, coaches included. Don’t worry it doesn’t go byhow well you score in the Open, that just wouldn’t be Fair with Travis on ateam.
Scoring
Points are awarded each week based on a contest. This week it is a social media contest. So be prepared to see my Instagram flooded with posts this weekend. They also host Friday Night Lights, where most of the people preform the workout. Points are awarded for showing up to Friday Night Lights and bonus points for having every member of your team there. Lastly you get a point for submitting your score.
Each week the contest is different and even includes a team t-shirt contest, which I am very much looking forward to this year. Not only that but we are also doing a decades day which will be fun is included one week as well. Although Week 2 I will be in Indiana, so I will be in a different box. But just the general sense of community is amazing.
Ok now on to me doing the actual workout!!
My First RX CrossFitOpen Workout
First, I was super excited to do the first workout of this years Open as RX and not scaled. It was my original goal to complete one RX and now I have done that. I may try to do another one depending on how these workouts turn out.
I have a workout buddy at our gym, and we partner up as well as judge each other in the Open workouts. She likes to go first and get it out of the way. I like to go last so I can figure out a good strategy. We are similar in most workout finishes with a few minor differences.
My Results
After she went, Istarted off strong and confident. But struggled to maintain the pace I startedoff with. In the end she was yelling at me to beat her and I did by one wallball, but I couldn’t have done it without her support.
That’s the thing. When push comes to shove and I thought I wasgoing to give in I had a huge group of people cheering me on and urging me to finishand pick up the wall ball.
That moment when you have a group of people that you workout with on a regular basis cheering you on. That’s the moment. It is what CrossFit is all about. Pushing yourself to your limit.
Anyway, back to how I did. I started off strong on the wall balls but still chose to break them up. On the rower I went out hard. Which was way too hard for me to maintain. I straight ran out of gas. My legs didn’t blow up like I expected. Also, if I could have maintained better breathing, I may have been able to do more wallballs in a set. I did finish with a larger set to keep pushing and finish.
I ended up finishing with 5 rounds and 19 wallballs. It totaled out to 209 reps. And it definitely felt good to mark the RX. I would be interested to retest this workout in a few months or even 6 months from now, but I will not be redoing it.
Well that’s it for today. I hope you all enjoy it and I will share more next week!! Check out Tips for CrossFit Beginners if you are new!
