Finishing the CrossFit Open Workout 19.5 Strong

Ok so maybe I didn’t finish that strong, but I still feltgood about how I did this year. Because of my crazy schedule I had to doCrossFit Open Workout 19.5 on Monday instead of Friday like I normally do. Ialso decided at the last minute to RX this workout.

I wasn’t originally planning on RXing this last workout. Mainly because I can’t do chest to bar pull-ups, but I can do thrusters at 65lbs. So, with the encouragement of my coach and my fellow CrossFitters I did it RX. And got 33. But instead of just stopping I continued to workout and did my jumping pull-ups and thrusters at 65lbs.

That shit gets heavy.

CrossFit Open 19.5

CrossFit Open Workout 19.5

For Time:

33-27-21-15-9

  • Thrusters
  • Chest-to-bar Pull-ups

Time Cap: 20 Minutes

This workout is like Fran on steroids. After your first roundyou are exhausted and still not even half way done with the workout. Then addon the chest-to-bar pull-ups and your grip is gone. Luckily, I didn’t rip thistime but my forearms blew up.

How I Tackled 19.5

By no means do I pretend to be an expert on how to plan aworkout, but I am a CrossFit Level 1 Trainer and I know myself, very well actually. So, I know how I should attack a workout and I am working on getting better onadvising others.

For this workout, originally I had planned to do big sets ofthrusters because I had originally planned to scale it. I knew I could bustthem out faster at the lighter weight. I had already gone back and looked atwhat I had done in 18.5 and was prepared to bust my butt to get this finishedscaled in under 15 minutes. I wanted to come in and do it as fast as I could.

But that’s not what ended up happening. Since I did it as RX with 20 more pounds on the bar I decided to break up my thrusters and break them up early. This was now going to be my limiting factor. The jumping pull-ups were doable for me although I knew I would need to break them up I also knew my rest periods between wouldn’t need to be as long.

I started with a goal to break up after about 7 for thefirst round and then try and do 6s or 5s for the rest of the first set.Pull-ups was aimed to stay at 5 reps for the entire first round. The secondround I wanted to stay at 5 reps for as long as possible. Eventually working myway down to 3s or even 2s if I had to.

How I Actually did 19.5

I did good on the first 15 thrusters. Then it got heavy. Ifelt good about how I even ended my 33 thrusters. After the 33 pull-ups I knewthe rest was going to suck. I struggled to finish the 27 thrusters. I have aganglion cyst in my wrist, and it was in a lot of pain.

But thanks to my fellow CrossFitters I kept going. Let’s behonest, I didn’t have to keep going I already had my score at this pointanything that I did after that was for me just to get in a workout. And boy didI.

I ended up finishing the round of 21 and getting to the barin time to do 1 thruster in the round of 15. My forearms blew up and my wristwas killing me, but I survived and did more thrusters at 65 lbs than I think I everhave.

Ending CrossFit Open 2019

It was a bittersweet ending to the Open for me. I have beenat this box for 2 years and have loved every bit of it. I am sad to be leavingthis box, but I am excited for what my future holds.

It was great being able to end the CrossFit Open with some of my best friends and the support I have had here is amazing. I know not every box is always the same, but I love CrossFit Passion. I have learned so much not just about CrossFit but also about myself since I have been here.

And I will take all of that with me on to Germany and hopefully find another amazing box to work out in! Until next time!
