CrossFit Open Workout 20.1 One and Done
Monday was the last day to submit your times for CrossFit Open Workout 20.1. And I hope you killed it! But if you didn’t that is okay too.
I was one of those who did it RX and felt good about that, however the burpees killed me. Literally.
Seeing as I was totally unprepared and undertrained to do the Open, I was still relatively happy with my results. Do I feel like I could do better? Definitely. Was I willing to redo it? Nope!
I will say this year’s Open announcement was much better than the first one done last year, however I didn’t watch it Live now that I am living in Germany. The time difference is just too much plus I got up and did the workout at 5am here.
I needed my beauty sleep.
Now let’s talk about this workout.
Open Workout 20.1
10 Rds for Time:
- 8 Ground-to-overhead (G2O)
- 10 Bar-facing Burpees
Time Cap: 15 Min
My first thought was I hate burpees. And then my second thought was that I could RX this workout, even though I knew I would not finish in under the time Cap.
The RX weight for the G2O is 95lbs for men and 65lbs for women. And the scaled weight was 65lbs for the men and 45lbs for the women.
The other big difference between scaling and RX versions of this workout was how you got over the bar during the burpees. RX workout requires a two foot jump over the bar, where the scale you can step over the bar.
Thankfully, RX burpees included stepping back and up into the pushup position at the bottom of the burpee. This saved me. Again, I hate burpees.
How My New Box does the Open
Last Open, I talked about how my old box did the Open in my post I RX'd My First CrossFit Open Workout 19.1. Well now I am in Germany, and in a new box. My routine is definitely changing. But change isn’t always bad!
My new box, CrossFit Kaiserslautern, does a group Open, similar to Friday night lights, on Saturday. However, we can still do the Open workout in regular classes on Friday. Which is what I chose to do.
Because I choose to do it on Friday, and my schedule doesn’t allow me the same availability that I had in the states, I have little prep time. Basically, I woke up at 4 am and checked the workout. Saw the devil (burpees), and got dressed. I was at my box at 5 am ready to go. Less strategy went into this workout than what I used to do.
Last year, I watched the announcement on Thursday night. Then Friday morning I would watch Training Think Tank’s YouTube video on their first thoughts all before I actually did the workout on Friday at noon.
That is a lot of time to prep compared to 1 hr.
How this Open Workout went
Similar to the last Open, I have some goals for myself. Last year I wanted to do at least one workout RX and I ended up doing 4 of the 5 workouts RX.
This year my goal is similar to my goal last year, mainly because I am not in the same shape that I was in last time. Otherwise, my goal would be to do 4 of the 5 as RX.
But seeing as I have now accomplished the first workout RX, which was my goal, I will up it to 2 workouts. And we will just see how it goes as the next 4 weeks progress.
With this workout, I knew my strength was going to be in the G2O and my weakness was going to be the burpees. What I was not prepared for, was how out of breath the burpees left me going into the G2O.
Even when I was nearing the 15 minute mark, the weight wasn’t too heavy for me to move, more I was just so winded. Some conditioning would have done me some good before this workout.
I ended up with 5 rounds a 3 reps of the G2O. Not the greatest score but I will take it. And like I said earlier, I did not redo this workout for a better score.
Hope to see y’all next week!
